We'll be starting a new lesson in 2nd grade classrooms this Tuesday, and I am excited because it will feature some cool technology! We will learn about John Holland's theory of career choice. Basically, Holland said that people are most likely to be successful and happy in careers that fit their personalities. He said that there are 6 different personality types, and each personality has a cluster of careers that match it.
To represent the 6 personalities, I videotaped 6 people in our community (one from each type) talking about how their jobs match their personalities. Students will see a nurse, accountant, realtor, scientist, florist, and female welder! We will discuss the basics of the 6 personality types and identify some jobs that might be a good fit for people from each type. We should have time for students to do a simple worksheet to see which careers might suit their own personalities. Students will also work in groups to come up with a few questions to ask the people in the video. I will email our 6 community members a handful of our students' questions and we'll review their answers in our next lesson.

Since there is so much material here, it will probably take TWO lessons to complete! So, if you are a second grade parent, look for your child to bring home the worksheets about their personality and the careers that suit the different personality types after our next round of lessons in January or February. Students will likely need some help in understanding some of the careers listed- I simplified a great deal, but also wanted to stretch their thinking and expose them to as many ideas as possible. If you have any questions or if I can provide more information, please do not hesitate to let me know!
By the way, if you are interested in coming to school to speak to 2nd graders about YOUR career, we will once again have a 2nd Grade Career Day in May this year! I will send out more information about that in the spring.
