K and 1st Kelso Follow-Up Lesson

I'm sorry to be late in telling you that we started a new lesson in 1st grade on Wednesday. It is a follow-up to our previous lesson, which introduced the Kelso's Choice conflict-resolution curriculum. Last time we didn't have much time to practice choosing from the 9 choices, or to role play the choices themselves.

So, this time, we have several "small problems" hidden in plastic eggs. A child will choose an egg, we'll read the problem out loud, and then the class will look through their sets "flippy cards" that illustrate all 9 choices to find the one they think they would try. We'll hold them up to see everyone's different ideas, then role play the choices in pairs to get some practice using them. We might have a pair or two come up to the TV cutout to show the whole group how their choice would work.

Your child's class may not have exactly the same lesson, because it hasn't been flowing quite as smoothly as I'd like so I'm still tweaking it here and there to improve it. I saw Henry, Miller/Ray, Durrett, and Payne's classes this week. All other first grade classes will take place in the two weeks after Thanksgiving, and kindergarten classes will likely carry over into the week after winter break. (Holiday happenings usually slow down my lesson schedule this time of year!)

If you have any questions, please let me know! I hope Kelso's ideas are helping teachers guide children in problem-solving in the classroom, and potentially helping you deal with sibling conflicts as well!
