I got so caught up in the technological difficulties with the email lists last week that I forgot to post a summary of the new lesson my intern and I are facilitating in second grade! The topic of this lesson is careers, in preparation for 2nd Grade Career Day on October 15. Students will learn that "the more you learn, the more you earn." In other words, on average, they will earn a higher salary if they graduate from college or get other additional training/education than if they end their education after high school. We hope this will motivate them to do their very best in school now, as they build the foundation for their future studies. They'll also learn that there are more than 40,000 different jobs in the world for them to choose from! Finally, we will pass out cards showcasing unique careers that the students may not have heard of, such as a speech writer, webmaster, and map-maker. Each student will receive one card, and will introduce that career to the class by appearing on "TV" (a cardboard cut-out of a television that my intern prepared- see photo below). This should help expand their knowledge of a wide variety of careers.
Last week we did the lesson in the following classes: Myrick, Singley, Frith, Hamner, Brown, Dean, Johnson, Turner. All other classes will participate in the lesson this week or the Wednesday after Fall Break. This is the first lesson that my intern, Miss Laura Robinson, has planned and taken the lead in facilitating, and it has gone great so far!
